As it’s the week of our NSPCC Number Day, Year 6 thought they would teach the world (via our blog) some maths strategies. Please take a look at Jazmine’s!
EXAMPLE: What is 2/3 of 150?
I will be showing you how to find a fraction of an amount!
1ST STEP
Take this as a note always divide by the denominator (3) then by multiply by the numerator (2). First you want to take the 3 then divide it by 150 (150 ÷ 3 = ?). If you can do 15 ÷ 3 then you can do 150 ÷ 3 just make it ten times bigger! The answer that you will get is 50.
2nd step
After you have done 150 ÷ 3, you now have to multiply 50 by the numerator (2). So now do 50 x 2 and if you know 5 x 2 you should know how to do 50 x 2 just make it ten times bigger! After you have done that you should end up with 100!
Answer!
Now after you multiply the number by the numerator (50 x 2 = 100) you will get your answer to your question! Now you know that 2/3 of 150 is 100!
Thank you Jazmine! That was really thorough and detailed. I have now learnt how to find a fraction of an amount!
A good learning tips. It was easy to find a fraction of an amount. Thank you Jazmine.
