Hi Year 5, I am really missing our reading lessons and our cosy reading! I have just finished the book Explorer by Katherine Rundell, which is all about four children who get lost in the Amazon jungle – I would really recommend this. I’m going to have a go at reading the next instalment of Brightstorm, which is called Darkwhispers. Do you have any book recommendations for me? What books have you been enjoying? Comment below!
I loved these words from the books I’ve been reading:
- supple
- grimacing
- charred
- furrowed
- tendrils
- grudgingly
- brusquely
- convalesce
- indignantly
- recoiled
- inscrutable
- shoal
- Can you define these words?
- Can you find synonyms?
- Can you use then in a sentence?

Great recommendation, Lenny! Year 6 read some of Skellig in the Autumn term. It’s a book that really makes you think. It has some interesting messages:-)
Miss Lee
I have read Percy Jackson and the last Olympian for the third time this week, I really enjoy them. The whole set is great i love the book so much they are written by Rick Riordan – they are adventure stories based on Greek myths in modern life. The main characters are Percy, Annabeth and Grover who show up in every book. My favourite character is Bianca and Thiala because they are very adventurous and brave.
I looked up tendrils (noun)
1: a long, thin, leafless twining stem or extension with which some climbing plants attach themselves to a support.
2: something similarly long, thin, and twining, such as a lock of hair.
synonym:twine
Great work Cassie! I love an adventurous and brave character. Keep up the good work!
That’s brilliant Cassie, I might have to pop to Y5’s bookshelf and take a Percy Jackson book to read as they sound great! Do you have any words for me to find Cassie?
I have got marred and forged for you.
I found furrowed. It can be a noun
1 a long narrow ditch made in the ground for planting seeds.
2 any narrow groove in a surface.
Or it can be a verb
1. to make furrows in.
Well done Cassie! Keep exploring different vocabulary.
I love those books to Cassie
My favourite character is Mr D, the God of wine

thank you for the school books you have sent me Miss Andrew.
I will use them regularly and also use the problems of the day in the maths books. I will use the TYM sheets in my maths book as-well.
You’re very welcome!
I recommend you to read The Beast of Buckingham Palace. It’s all about a boy who lives in Buckingham Palace and in the cellar there’s a statue that is actually a beast. Also,it is made in the future. I think it’s a really good book. I rate it a ten out of ten.
Sorry it’s Ciona.
That sounds really interesting Ciona, I’ll put it on my ‘to read’ list!
