This year SHINE is our whole school over arching theme. Throughout the year we will encourage the children to dream, dare, ask, achieve, believe, be adventurous, take risks, be curious and creative.
Our overall topic this term is called Burn Brightly! We will be finding out all about the Great Fire of London and the chain of events that led to the disaster.
RE is always at the heart of our learning. Our topics this term are:
Holidays and Holydays
Where we will explore why holidays are special to us and consider the importance of Holydays in the church calendar.
Where we will be learning to make good choices regarding looking after our world and how we treat God’s creatures.
Where we will question ‘who is our neighbour?’ and think about our neighbours around the world, including all of the animals and insects.
Year 1 will launch their brand new school year with an exciting journey as we Burn Brightly! Our imaginations will run wild as we learn about The Great Fire of London and the chain of events that led to the disaster.
During history lessons we will find out who Samuel Pepys was and how people lived in 1666. We will become detectives as we investigate historical sources in order to answer our questions.
In geography we will compare hot and cold places around the world. We will use atlases to identify where in the world these places are and learn about the continents and oceans.
This will aid our scientific knowledge as we create weather reports using our observations and research skills. We will carefully observe the changing seasons as summer ends and autumn begins. We will also learn about animals including fish, reptiles and birds. We will be particularly interested in where in the world animals come from.
Our art skills will be developed as we learn about the artist Molly Williams. We will find out about how dance inspired her to create a range of sculptures. We will experiment with our body movements and create our very own dancing sculptures.
We will take part in weekly dance lessons where we will help choreograph a fire inspired routine to In the Hall of the Mountain King—better known as the Alton Towers theme tune. We will also take part in Multi Skills sessions with our coach Gordon Fearne.
In D&T we will adapt recipes as we create bread worthy of the bakers shop in Pudding Lane. We will try a range of breads before we are let loose as we design then make our own. Our maths knowledge will come in useful as we weigh and measure ingredients.
Our English lessons will be full of exciting opportunities to explore the story of the Three Little Pigs in great detail. We will learn to retell this story with the help of Talk for Writing. We will innovate this story and then create our own—prepare to be amazed!
Suring weekly computing sessions, we will learn how to stay safe online and begin to log in to the PCs and select programs. We will also begin to learn typing skills.
This term is going to be packed full of adventures and lots of exciting opportunities and learning. We cant wait to get started!
