Hello Year 2!

We are writing a fact file about Mary Seacole this week. Mary Seacole was a significant nurse in the Victorian era.

Another significant nurse was Florence Nightingale. Watch this funny video to learn about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.

For your task, I would like you to type 2-3 sentences about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole in the comment boxes below. Of course, if you would like to challenge yourself, you should write more sentences and try to vary your vocabulary.

  1. Florence was good at maths. She was leading a party of 38 nurses nearby Scuteri to check the soldier’s conditions in Crimea.
    Mary Seacole had lost all of her money in 1856.
    In 1881 Mary Seacole died.

      • In 1856, the Treaty of Paris was signed and the soldiers left Crimea. She stayed with her “British Hotel” with debts which she paid off by selling everything she had.

      • Mary Seacole didn’t get the same things as Florence Nightingale because she was black. Mary Seacole died in 1881. Mary Seacole used herbal remedies such as ginger and lemons to treat people.
        Florence Nightingale was a nurse. Florence Nightingale was called ‘ Lady of the lamp’ because she worked through the night caring for the sick. There are 3 statues of her in Derby.(She helped with Re-building a hospital in Derby.)

Mary Seacole lost all her money because she went to Britan and made a hospital to help the wounded soldiers that fought in the Crimean war in 1853.Mary Seacole was so brave that she went on the battle feild to help the wounded soldiers.She died in1881.She was 76 when she died.Florence Nighntingale was born in1820.She died in 1990.She died the age of 90.She invented the pie chart.And she was a pioneer of the modern nursing.

  4. BREAKING NEWS: On 7th of July 2021, London Road Community Hospital was renamed to Florence Nightingale Community Hospital. Sometimes my mummy works there.

  5. It is not fair that Mary Seacole was treated differently to Florence Nightingale because Mary Seacole was black and Florence Nightingale was white. At the time black people were treated differently to white people.

  6. Mary Seacole was a nurse who helped injured soldiers during the Crimean War 1853. She sold her home in Jamaica to buy her own ticket to Crimea. She used her own money to build a hostel for injured soldiers.

  7. Florence was a British nurse. She was good at maths. She was the first to create a pie chart.

    Mary Seacole was born in Jamaica. She was helping the sick and wounded. Mary set her own hotel business.
