Today, Year 2 role-played being poor Victorian children in the workhouse. We started our day by being given Victorian names. We pretended to sleep on the cold, hard floor (which is what the Victorian beds would have felt like). Then we went out to the exercise yard for our morning exercises. After that, we had our breakfast – gruel! It was dry and lumpy (although some of us did dare ask for seconds)!
Finally, we were given our workhouse jobs. Boys and girls weren’t allowed to work together so we were split up. The boys had to unpick rope into small threads and the girls had to scrub the floor and chairs.
Year 2 had a brilliant morning as Victorians and truly played their roles very well!
