Year 5

I’d like to say a warm welcome back to all Year 5 pupils and their families! I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful summer and are ready to be imaginative, ambitious and responsible as you enter Upper Key-Stage-Two. The theme for this year is ‘BRW Spirit Strong’ and is underpinned by a quote from Ezra: ‘Rise up, take courage and do it!’ I can’t wait to see you take risks, approach challenges with enthusiasm and how great resilience!

We CAN do it! How did Britain rise up during WWII?


This term we are exploring number, place-value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and measurement and statistics. We will be using our heuristics and bar-models to solve problems related to these topics. We will also be revising and consolidating our timetables and number facts to support these topics.


In English, our writing will be inspired by ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ and ‘Harry Potter’ to create imaginative recounts, descriptions, diary entries and letters.

Come and See

Throughout RE the children will be exploring their talents and gifts through the topic of ‘Ourselves’. They will also have a chance to look forward and consider their ‘Life choices’ and how to make the right choices whilst spreading the Good News. The topic of ‘Hope’, just before Christmas, will allow the children  to think about using our faith to hope and how to use our time wisely whilst waiting. Our exploration of another World Faith– Judaism – will give us chance to consider the topic of Community and the communities we are part of.

Wider Topic

During science lessons, children will be explaining the life cycles of plants and mammals and how living things are classified. They will also be investigating how light and shadows are created and how light travels.

History will see Year 5 looking at WWII and have them understand key events such as: the origins of the war, the Blitz, evacuation, life on the home-front and VE day. In Geography, we will be investigating the impact the widening of the A453 has had on our local area.

DT will allow us to design, create and evaluate our own WWII tanker using pulleys and gears. In Art we will take inspiration from Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures by making our own sculptures inspired by landscapes.

In PE we will be developing our hockey skills and we also have swimming sessions. We also hope to spend some time at Glapton Woods to develop our confidence and respect for nature and the environment in our Forest Schools programme.

In PE we will begin sessions developing our athletic skills, ready for sports day. and rounders. Dance will be every Friday afternoon, focusing on the ‘braver, stronger, fearless’ theme. We hope to spend some time at Glapton Woods to build our confidence, take risks and respect for the environment, whilst looking at the features of plants during Forest Schools.

Year 5 will also be studying French, building up a basic vocabulary and essential conversation skills through singing and other interactive media.

In Computing, the children will be able to develop their understanding of internet safety and get creative using Minecraft.

Help From Home

1. Please check Homework diaries regularly for weekly information about your child’s work and progress. Children’s diaries will be checked and signed on Monday mornings to ensure reading is taking place at home. Your child must be filling this in every day with what pages they have read.

2. Children will be given homework each week on a Thursday.  As Year 5s, they are encouraged to take responsibility for remembering to complete their homework, but they may need the odd reminder from someone at home to get it done! Homework is not something that should worry them and I will remind them that if they are ever struggling to complete a homework task, then they should come and see me.

3. It is very important that all children can recall their number facts quickly and correctly, so when possible please encourage your child to practise their times tables and mental addition/subtraction through TTRS, Mathletics and Numbots.

4. “”The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go”― Dr. Seuss. Reading every day is essential. Please discuss characters, themes, plots and ask for your child’s opinions on the books they are reading; this will help with their success in English. Recording this information in their homework diary is extremely useful evidence of their reading.

5. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every day. They need a suitable PE kit for both indoor and outdoor PE. Their outdoor PE kit should include a hoodie and something to keep their legs warm (gym leggings or jogging bottoms).

6. Children will be given a list of spellings each week on a Thursday. These will be tested the following Thursday. Please keep a check of these regularly.  A useful way to practise spellings is to include them in interesting or funny sentences.

7. Your support this year will be crucial and I’d like to thank you in advance for your support over the coming term.

  1. But the summer term is the last term! I’ll really miss Miss Cotter! But this is the last term, we have to make the best out of it with Miss Cotter! WE CAN DO THIS!

    • She is the best teacher ever. She helps children if they struggle,encourages pupils to become more interactive with the world, is an inspiration to us all, can feel from the pupils’ point-of-view, sorts out any troubles, gives us prizes: I could go on forever…

      • I really do agree with you Methmi! Miss Cotter will always be PHENOMENAL! She will always be in the memory of our minds of our class!

  2. Miss Cotter, the quote you put above:”This is my year” means a lot to me. This year, in Year 5, I feel like I have accomplished more achievements than ever before. I feel like you have inspired me to make this year the best I can before going into Year 6, where I will have to work very hard.

    • So, thank you for all you have done for me, whether I liked it or not, because you did it to make good. Thank you for being a good friend and teacher.

  4. I am having so much fun in year 5 , I am really enjoying our science lesson : we are testing egg shells in different liquids which are coke, black current ,bitter lemon, water ,orange juice and tea. The grossest one is tea because it is mouldy a spotty .Miss Cotter is the best teacher ever!

  6. I am thoroughly enjoying year 5. We have already learned so much, such as, how Henry VIII mastered his monarchy, we also read the book Treason which I found very interesting. I am also really enjoying our current topic about the ancient Greeks. We are learning so much about how they lived in the past.

  7. This my 3rd week of home school and I am learning new skills. Like preparing meals for my family, cleaning and keeping my room tidy, washing and ironing clothes. I start my day with a Joe Wicks workout and I do some english and maths tasks.Then after lunch, I practice my front and back flips on the trampoline. In the afternoon, I do some art work like creating different patterns. After all my work is done I keep in touch with my friends online.

  8. Hi 👋 everyone. Hope you are well.
    I’ve been doing lots of things like baking brownies , doing lots of art inspired by other artists, I’ve even continued doing my kilometre a day and I’ve made a schedule of what I am going to do every day. My favourite thing I have done so far is paint a picture of some tulips 🌷 and my mum has emailed it to school so you can see.

    • Hi CharChar, it’s Imogen, I have been doing lots of art too, I have also been doing lots of gardening so I really like the idea of painting tulips, I think I am going to give that a try and paint some of the flowers in my garden.

    • Cool I would love to bake brownies charlotte but I am not exactly the best baker. The tulip work sounds awesome and im glad your not painting on the tulips though! Me and my mum made a delicious lemon cake but it got a tiny bit burnt!

Hi everyone, it’s Imogen, I am missing you all, I have been enjoying watching the Blessed Robert YouTube Channel, I have made an eco poster, I have done lots of gardening, I have been enjoying online dance classes, and have been doing a lot of creative drawing, I even made my very own vending machine and it works! I will try and take some photos to show you all. I can’t wait to see you all soon.

  10. Hiya everyone its Katie, i am really missing you all and when quarantine has ended then i cant wait to see you in class with all our Blessed Robert Staff! The things i have been doing is: doing home school work (for 1 hour or more), Singing to my fishes, Created an eco poster (thanks for the idea Imogen), Spent time with family, Playing with my mums key worker children (so there not bored), got the house done and decorated, Clean my room, Packed my bags for school, Learnt how to cook easy things and made lots posters for the whole class on washing our hands for 20 seconds and staying indoors! Im really missing you all! Please stay safe and remember us all! Bye xx

    • By meaning “poster for the class” i mean like one poster in the class for EVERYONE to look at (could go on the door or on a wall in our class room).

  12. Dear diary,
    The date is 09/07/39
    Today has been an unusual day. First of all this morning my mum just got off the phone crying. I asked why she was crying but she just said nothing, so this is why I’m writing this. The only reason I am writing this is that if it is something bad we are still together. Let’s get back to talking about the day. About an hour ago my mum said to me that there is a war going on very soon so we have to evacuate. I thought it was going to be fun going to move but what I didn’t know is that it was just me and Harry going.
    The next day
    Today is the big day we are going to the station getting on the train and going to a new house. Mum just asked me to pack my bag. I had to put a gas mask in it, but under the gas mask I put two biscuits. After we packed mum took us to the station when we got there was a strange man in a black suit and he put a label on me that said Isabella Georgia Williams. I told him that everybody at school called me Belle.
    On the train
    When we got at the train mum gave both Harry and I a kiss on the forehead. Harry was only five so I had to look after him. Before we got on the train, Harry started to cry so I gave him a biscuit to make him happy. It’s been about one hour on the train and there has just been an alert say that we are 15 minutes away. When we got to the countryside there was lots of couples but there was one couple that picked us they looked very nice and humble. The first thing they said is that you must be Isabella and Harry. I told the lady to call me belle. Their names were Sheila Smith, Albert Smith and their baby was called Victoria Smith.
    The house
    Mr and Mrs Smith took us to their house. Then showed us to our rooms, both of them were very big. They said to unpack and make ourselves at home. Albert was an English writer and Sheila was a nurse. They were very loving but Harry and I still missed Mum. The next morning we went to get breakfast, but Mr Smith wasn’t at the table. I asked Mrs Smith where he was and she said that he was in his office. She said that after breakfast I could go and see him. After breakfast I went to go and see Albert. He was writing a poem.
